making of a popular Nepali musical (in the Bollywood vein) starring one
of Nepal's most famous devis. Those who've seen an Indian movie of this
genre can fill in the blanks regarding style and content. 'Kaliwood',
of course, is the Nepali derivation from the Indian term Bollywood
which, in turn, comes from hollywood.
Filmmaking started in Nepal around 1962. The state made three propaganda films between 1964 and 1971 and later formed Royal Nepal Film Corporation (RNFC) in 1974. RNFC made some films, developed some infrastructures and manpower. Even though some of the films made by RNFC became hits, it could not do much to develop the sector.
Sometimes barking like a dog or howling like a fox, Manoj Gajurel used to make people laugh in the village. A popular comedian, Gajurel has achieved the headay of popularity here in Nepal and abroad.
